Perspective as Power: Jupiter Opposes Pluto 9/00-5/01

by Karen Steen, Astrologer

Since early September 2000, Jupiter and Pluto have been in opposing positions in our zodiac (180 degrees of zodiacal longitude separate them in space). They will remain in opposition to each other, Jupiter in Gemini and Pluto in Sagittarius, until May of 2001. The opposition of Jupiter to Pluto occurs every 12 - 13 years and signals a recurring evolutionary theme on all levels of society, from personal to cultural. Jupiter rules laws, morality, life philosophies, and religions.  Pluto rules power struggles, compulsive behavior, and the death and rebirth (regeneration or transformation) of any system. Their cyclic opposition in space corresponds to a recurring call to transform righteousness into perspective.

Historically, the Jupiter/Pluto opposition correlates to decisive military actions and conquests, increased fanaticism and religious wars, and the rise to power of progressive autocrats. These events ultimately reveal fanaticism and righteousness as a limited basis of social power.

In our personal lives, this cyclic planetary opposition offers opportunities to confront and explore our deepest level of personal integrity. Pay close attention to niggling experiences of self-hypocrisy, experiences that may have intensified since the planetary opposition began in August. Where are we saying one thing and doing another? An honest confrontation of ourselves here will reveal where controlling behavior patterns emanate from our felt lack of personal power.  Where are righteous thoughts, feelings, and behaviors covering up fear of vulnerability?

If we hold ourselves more deeply accountable to the spirit and intent of our life philosophy and ethics, we can reorient ourselves from the crutch of righteousness to the liberating power of perspective. In confronting our repressed fear of vulnerability, cloaked in 'shoulds', wagging fingers, and personal rationalizations, we free ourselves to a more accurate and powerful perception of our world. We see our reality and that of others as the individual perspective that it is, nothing more and nothing less.  In acting to not compromise with our soul, we harness our real creative power.
